Review: The Innocent Assassins by Pema Donyo

THE INNOCENT ASSASSINS
Young Adult - Romance, Thriller, Crime
Release Date: June 24th 2014 by Astraea Press
GOODREADS SYNOPSIS:
There are three rules to staying an assassin at the corporation of Covert Operatives: (1) your parents must be deceased, (2) your contracts must remain confidential, and (3) you must be under the age of eighteen.

After a murder mission goes awry a month before her eighteenth birthday, Covert Operatives assassin Jane Lu finds herself caught by the federal government and forced to spy for the CIA while remaining in Covert Operatives. Once her spying mission is over she will be allowed to live a civilian life without facing criminal consequences, a life she's only dreamed of having.

As Jane leaks information to the CIA, she uncovers secrets with enough power to both destroy Covert Operatives and her own boyfriend, Adrian King, who's next in line to be CEO of the company. When her identity as a double agent for the CIA is discovered within Covert Operatives, she must decide where her allegiance, and her heart, truly lies.

MY THOUGHTS:

This book was an another 'okay' read for me this year. It wasn't bad but it wasn't spectacular either. Everything seemed predictable. From the characters, to the plot and the plot twists. The reason why I decided to read this book is because it reminds me of Nikita, a TV series aired by CW. I loved Nikita so much. And maybe Nikita is the reason why everything seemed predictable in this book. During the time I was reading this book, I couldn't stop comparing it to Nikita.

The main character in this book is Jane Lu. She is one of the assassins from Covert Operatives. During a mission, she was unfortunately caught by the CIA. When she got caught, the CIA made a deal with Jane. She will be spying at Covert Operatives for the CIA, in exchange she will be allowed to live a normal life without facing criminal consequences.

Jane is a determined and strong young woman, but she gets too whiny when it comes to Adrian King, her boyfriend and who's is also next in line to be Covert Operatives CEO. They break up at random times and after a while, they get back together again. UGH

Trust me, I'm a big fan of the romance between Jane and Adrian. They are very hot together. Also, even though I think that Adrian is a one hot assassin, I don't like his character. He's too focused on being the CEO of Covert Operatives. He's arrogant, based on his thoughts and actions, and definitely a control freak. I'm hoping there would be another book so I would see Adrian's softer side.

Even though it was predictable, I still love the plot. I love to read anything that involves assassins and because it was very Nikita-esque. There were action scenes, yes, but I wanted MORE action. It seemed like there were lots more kissing scenes than action scenes. It's perfectly understandable though since the main theme is Romance.

Even though there were inconsistencies in this book, I'd still consider The Innocent Assas
sins a fast-paced and thrilling book. I love Pema Donyo's writing style. It's very fluent and expressive. I can easily understand the story she's trying to tell her readers. She knows how to write a story that will make her readers crave for more, and I actually did crave for more. Plus I love the book cover, very unique. If you love reading stories involving spies and assassins with lots of kissing, this a perfect read
for you.

RATING:

3 HEARTS!
Romance filled with betrayal and crime.

The Seven Deadly Sins TAG

Hello Troglodytes! Paula @ Her Book Thoughts tagged us both to do The Seven Deadly Sins Tag. This is our first tag we did together so bear with us.

GREED
(What is your most inexpensive book?)

Carmel : Recently, I bought books and they were just 3 for $10. First one was a Nancy Drew Book. Second was The Hunger Games (Library Edition). The third was the one pictured on the right, which was signed copy of A Girl Named Digit. For a book around $3 (P150), this is definitely a treasure!
Kyla : Do free Kindle deals on Amazon, count? If yes, then I recently got Marilyn Grey's The Unspoken Series (box set) for free.

WRATH
(What author do you a love/hate relationship with?)

Kyla : Oh, this is hard. I don’t really have a love/hate relationship with authors. Though I have read Parallel by Lauren Miller and it actually started good, it was fast-paced, very intriguing but I ended up not loving it.
Carmel : This is hard! For every author, I have this book of his/her that I really do not like. For instance, I totally love Cora Carmack's and . I have it both in ebook and paperback. But when I read the third book, I did not like it. It was far from the first two books.

SLOTH
(What book have you neglected reading due to laziness?)

Carmel : I HAVE NOT READ MOST OF THEM!!! AAAAHHHH! (I only read Balefire, Grave Mercy, The Goddess Test, Nerve, Psych Major Syndrome, etc)
Kyla
: The list is long but here's the top three on the list: If I Stay by Gayle Forman, The Fault in our Stars by John Green, The Selection series by Kiera Cass.

GLUTTONY
(What book have you devoured over and over again with no shame?)

Kyla : Vain by Fisher Amelie, for sure! The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May, and June by Robin Benway comes close in second.
Carmel : It would be Drowning Instinct by Ilsa J. Bick. It has been my most-read book so far.

LUST
(What attributes do you find attractive in male or female characters?)

Carmel : I love hacker (book) boyfriends. To name a few: Griff (from ) , Z (from Olivia Twisted ). I automatically go for the British ones also. (Yes, that's you Garrick!) Well, if you have not read Losing It , read it cause Garrick is such a... #HotforTeacher (Does that make me a horrible person?)

Kyla : I like mysterious and dreamy male characters. Most of my book boyfriends are from contemporary novels. Dingane from Vain, Aiden from Haven, and Henry from The Goddess Test.

ENVY
(What book would you most like to receive as gift?)

Kyla :  I've been dying to read Winterspell, it was published a month ago. While For Real by Alison Cherry is not pub yet. OMG GUYS! Look at the cover of A Thousand Pieces of You!!! Isn't it lovely?

Carmel : My picks are  not per se expensive books, but I really love the covers so I would like them as gifts. I have them all on ebooks, but I want a hardcover edition!!!

Waiting on Wednesday: Paperweight by Meg Haston

http://breakingthespine.blogspot.com/
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill from Breaking the Spinewhich spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating!

Kyla's WoW Pick:

PAPERWEIGHT

Genre/s: Young Adult-Contemporary
Release Date: July 7th 2015
Publisher: HarperTeen
GOODREADS SYNOPSIS:
Seventeen-year-old Stevie is trapped. In her life. In her body. And now in an eating-disorder treatment center on the dusty outskirts of the New Mexico desert.
Life in the center is regimented and intrusive, a nightmare come true. Nurses and therapists watch Stevie at mealtime, accompany her to the bathroom, and challenge her to eat the foods she’s worked so hard to avoid.

Her dad has signed her up for sixty days of treatment. But what no one knows is that Stevie doesn't plan to stay that long. There are only twenty-seven days until the anniversary of her brother Josh’s death—the death she caused. And if Stevie gets her way, there are only twenty-seven days until she too will end her life.

In this emotionally haunting and beautifully written young adult debut, Meg Haston delves into the devastating impact of trauma and loss, while posing the question: Why are some consumed by their illness while others embark on a path toward recovery?

Why?

I saw this book through a friend (Shannon from It Starts at Midnight) on Goodreads, she added it to her TBR shelf. The cover really caught my attention, it's simple and pretty. I'm very intrigued with the synopsis too, I love to read books that deal with real life issues. I'm really looking forward to read this very soon! This is another contemporary novel to look forward this coming 2015! #yay

Movie Review: Mockingjay Part 1

The movie that we are going to talk about today is
MOCKINGJAY Part 1!

Rating:
5 awesome hearts!!!

Reasons why we LOVE Mockingjay?
Kyla: Uh... who doesn't love Mockingjay? If you don't love it, we can't be buddies. The casts + props + effects = ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

Carmel: I love how Mockingjay validated the previous movies. You would see how Katniss struggles to fight for Peeta and Peeta does the same thing. They would be willing to go lengths just to protect each other.

Let's discuss the the movie!
(Note: May contain spoilers. You have been warned!)

Was this a great movie for Katniss and Peeta shippers?

Carmel: YES!!! Katniss always thought of Peeta *sigh* Damn you, President Snow!

Kyla: Yes! In this movie, Katniss was always thinking about Peeta and his safety since Peeta is captured by the Capitol.

What should the diehard fans watch for?

Carmel: I was amazed how good The Hanging Tree was. The tune was catchy. I couldn't stop singing the song after the movie.

Kyla: Probably when J. Law (Katniss) sings The Hanging Tree. Her voice is perfection, I'd buy an album if she'll have one.

What are you looking forward on the second half of Mockingjay ?

Carmel: THE ENDING!!! I hope I will feel the same feels as when I read the book. The series was and still is my favorite of all that I have read. I hope they will give justice to the last film.

Kyla: I'm really looking forward for the ending. I love how the book ended so I hope the second part of the movie adaptation ends great. I'm rooting for part two!!!!

YOU WATCH OUT FOR THESE SCENES:

Moving on to the story...

Favorite scene/s --
Kyla: When Katniss sent a message to President Snow. She said,"If we burn, you burn with us." That line gave me goosebumps. All I can say to Katniss is; "you go girl!"

Carmel: When Katniss and the group went to District 8. It was a very heartbreaking scene! ALSO, WHEN KATNISS CONFIRMED THAT PEETA WAS ALIVE!

We both love the movie soooo much and we hope you did enjoy it as much as we did!
What are your thoughts?
Did you like it or not?
(Part 2, why are you so far away!)

Literary Fiction - Science Fiction, Romance
Publication: January 8th 2014 by Curiosity Quills Press
GOODREADS SYNOPSIS:
When Nigel Walden is fourteen, the UNHAPPENINGS begin. His first girlfriend disappears the day after their first kiss with no indication she ever existed. This retroactive change is the first of many only he seems to notice. Several years later, when Nigel is visited by two people from his future, he hopes they can explain why the past keeps rewriting itself around him. But the enigmatic young guide shares very little, and the haggard, incoherent, elderly version of himself is even less reliable. His search for answers takes him fifty-two years forward in time, where he finds himself stranded and alone. And then he meets Helen. Brilliant, hilarious and beautiful, she captivates him. But Nigel’s relationships always unhappen, and if they get close it could be fatal for her. Worse, according to the young guide, just by entering Helen’s life, Nigel has already set into motion events that will have catastrophic consequences. In his efforts to reverse this, and to find a way to remain with Helen, he discovers the disturbing truth about the unhappenings, and the role he and his future self have played all along. Equal parts time-travel adventure and tragic love story, Unhappenings is a tale of gravely bad choices, and Nigel’s struggle not to become what he sees in the preview of his worst self.

MEET THE AUTHOR OF UNHAPPENINGS:

AUTHOR BIO:
Edward Aubry is a graduate of Wesleyan University, with a degree in music composition. Improbably, this preceded a career as a teacher of high school mathematics and creative writing. Over the last few years, he has gradually transitioned from being a teacher who writes novels on the side to a novelist who teaches to support his family. He is also a poet, his sole published work in that form being the sixteen stanza “The History of Mathematics.” He now lives in rural Pennsylvania with his wife and three spectacular daughters, where he fills his non-teaching hours spinning tales of time-travel, wise-cracking pixies, and an assortment of other impossible things.
