Troglodytes Approve 3: Before They Find Us by Michelle A. Hansen (Interview + Giveaway)

The third book with my seal of approval...

BEFORE THEY FIND US
by Michelle A. Hansen

Young Adult - Contemporary, Mystery/Thriller
Published November 2013 by Priest Rapids Press
PURCHASE: AmazonB&N

I’m going to make you wish you were dead.

Just a text. Seventeen-year-old Rebecca Hales tries not to worry. Probably a wrong number. Not really meant for her, and definitely not related to the crime she witnessed six years ago. Right?

Then two states away, a bomb goes off in her best friend's locker. Soon Ryan is labeled a terrorist and runs to the safest place he knows—Rebecca’s house in small-town Wyoming. It doesn’t take long for the FBI to show up asking questions. Rebecca lies, of course, and says she hasn’t seen him.

Now she's neck-deep in it with him, whatever "it" is. The only way out is to return to Vegas, where Ryan is a wanted man. The city of lies and illusion tests Rebecca’s wits as she struggles to find the person who framed Ryan and why.

Is Rebecca’s text linked to the bombing? And what does it have to do with a six year old murder? Rebecca needs to find out before she loses Ryan—and her own life.

WHY
?
Before They Find Us was surprisingly an amazing mystery/thriller novel with a hint of romance. I reviewed it here on C&K last year. It's one of my favorite reads last year -- I thoroughly enjoyed it because it was fast-paced and thrilling. I suggest that y'all should read it!

The author of BEFORE THEY FIND US, Michelle A. Hansen, gave me a chance to interview her. Check it out below:

1. How did you come up with the idea of Before They Find Us?
It all started with an attic door and a whacky news article. While I was living in Green River, Wyoming, our apartment had this funny looking attic door. Around the same time, I read an article about a guy in Japan who installed a hidden camera in his apartment after food went missing. He discovered a person living in his apartment. The hidden guest would come out when the owner was at work, eat, watch television, etc., then hide again before the man came home.

I starting wondering. What if it wasn’t a stranger? What if it was your best friend? What if he was hiding from the cops and knew he was safe in your house?

From there the story took off, changed and evolved into Before They Find Us.

2. Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Yes and no. In elementary school I won the young author’s contest more years than not, but I never considered it as a career. I didn’t realize people actually made a living writing books. I chose education, and as I got into the trenches of high school and read young adult books, I was like, “I could write this.”

When I left the classroom in 2002, I began writing in earnest. I wrote and shelved five complete manuscripts while collecting piles of rejection letters. Before They Find Us was the story that got the most nibbles, but no bites. I’m glad I had the opportunity to publish it. I’ve always loved Ryan and Rebecca’s story.

3. What is the best part of being an author?
Sharing stories, plain and simple. I loved literature classes because I love to discuss books. Reading is only half the fun. The other half is talking about what you took away from the story. Everyone takes different things away from a book. I’ve read reviews where I was like, “Wait, are you sure you read the book I wrote?” The text is only have the fun. The reader brings their own experience and world view to the process. Each reader interprets the text differently. That is the beauty of story.

4. Are you going to publish any other novels soon?
I have several projects in the works, but nothing that is coming to print soon. I just finished my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, which took two and a half years. I like to produce a book a year, but the MFA took so much time, I don’t have a book ready for 2015.

5. Recommend your book.
When her best friend is accused of setting off a bomb in his high school, Rebecca Hales vows to clear him, but when she realizes the bombing is linked to a crime she witnessed six years ago, uncovering the truth may mean losing her best friend and her heart along with him.

Before they Find Us will appeal to readers who like romantic suspense and thriller. It’s the story of best friends falling in love while their lives hang in the balance. The story is one girl’s answer to the question, “How far would you go to save your best friend?”

To Michelle A. Hansen; thanks for letting me interview you. It was really an honor.

...WAIT! Don't go yet! There's more!

  5. Mysteries are some of my fav books, and Thrillers I don't generally read, simply because I don't often come across the genre.

I love mystery novels, knowing what'll happen to the story and you expect/guess something that really unexpected.
