Blog Tour: Heartbreak Hotel by Deborah Moggach (Author Interview)

by Deborah Moggach

Fiction - Contemporary, Chick Lit
Published March 3rd 2015 by Overlook Press
Purchase: AmazonBarnes & NobleBook Depository
By the author of the bestselling The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Tulip Fever, the hilarious and romantic novel set in a crumbling bed and breakfast.

In her effortlessly winning novels Tulip Fever and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Deborah Moggach charmed readers and critics alike with her generous prose and hilarious dialogue. With Heartbreak Hotel, Moggach has triumphed once again.
When retired actor Buffy decides to leave London and move to rural Wales, he has no idea what he is letting himself in for.

In possession of a run-down bed and breakfast that leans more toward the shabby than the chic and is, quite literally, miles from nowhere, Buffy realizes that he needs to fill the beds—and fast. Otherwise, his vision of the pastoral countryside will go up in smoke.

Enter a motley collection of guests: Harold, whose wife has run off with a younger woman; Amy, who’s been unexpectedly dumped by her (not-so) nebbishy boyfriend and Andy, the hypochondriac postman whose girlfriend is much too much for him to handle. But under Buffy’s watchful eye, this disparate group of strangers finds that they have more in common than perhaps they first thought.

A charming romantic comedy that will captivate even the most determined urbanite, Heartbreak Hotel is a supreme entertainment.

1. How did you come up with the idea of HEARTBREAK HOTEL?
Deborah: I’d recently fallen in love with a man who lived in a little town in Wales, and then fell in love with the place. So I decided to write a book set there. Now I’ve moved there!

2. If HEARTBREAK HOTEL would become a film, who would you cast and why?
Deborah: For Buffy, either you go for a big boozy bloke like say Roger Allam (and English actor), who looks like Buffy and who I find very attractive, or one could go the skinny sexy route, say Bill Nighy.

3. Have you always wanted to be an author? If not, what did you want to be?
Deborah: Yes. If not, I would have been a landscape gardener. I love carting soil around and planting flowerbeds.

4. What is the best part of being an author?
Deborah: When people come up and say “that’s JUST what I feel but I’ve never put it into words”.

5. Do you have more upcoming novels this year?

Deborah: Yes, a novel called “Something To Hide”, which is set in Beijing, Texas, West Africa and London. Bit of a contrast to “Heartbreak Hotel”! It’s got big global themes but it’s also about disastrous love affairs.

6. Why should readers read HEARTBREAK HOTEL?
Deborah: Because it’s good, duh!

Troglodytes Approve 7: CREED by Trisha Leaver & Lindsay Currie (Interview + Giveaway)

I know Kyla has been posting a couple of giveaways already and now it is my turn!
Are you excited to know my pick is?
It is none other than...
by Trisha Leaver and Lindsay Currie!

Genre: Young Adult - Horror, Thriller
Published November 8th 2014 by Flux
PURCHASE: AmazonBarnes and Noble
Three went in. Three came out. None even a shadow of who they once were.

When their car breaks down, Dee, her boyfriend Luke, and his brother Mike walk through a winter storm to take refuge in a nearby town called Purity Springs. When they arrive, the emergency sirens are blaring and the small farming town seems abandoned. With no other shelter, they spend the night in an empty house.

But they soon discover that not everything in Purity Springs is as it seems. When the town's inhabitants suddenly appear the next morning, Dee, Luke, and Mike find themselves at the mercy of the charismatic leader, Elijah Hawkins, who plans to make Dee his new wife. Elijah's son, Joseph, offers to help them escape . . . but the price of his help may be more than Dee and her friends can bear.

Until now, I am seriously out of words on how I LOVE CREED! Is it weird to love something so disturbing and horrifying? Creed was able to deliver a really creepy horror story. The book definitely goes to my best of the best shelf. Everything was perfect -- the writing, the story, the pacing. DARK, GORY, TWISTED!  THE BEST!!! This is the creepiest YA horror book I have ever read so add it on your TBR, borrow a copy, buy it online. You won't regret! Once you start reading, Creed is hard to put down. I read it one sitting. It was truly suspenseful and it had me on the edge of my seat. I felt like I was the fourth member of the group. I keep giving Dee my unsolicited advice. I felt like I was part of the whole experience!  I look forward to the authors upcoming book releases!

Read through my interview with Lindsay below if you want to know more about Creed (and there's also a giveaway!!!)
Recommend your book CREED
(Personally, I feel like there’s a CABIN IN THE WOOD-ish aspect.  How about you?)

Oh my goodness! Recommend my own book? So hard! Well, I’d have to say that CREED is a psychological horror along the lines of Stephen King. There’s definitely a trapped sensation throughout the book and I can see how you came up with a comparison to Cabin in the Woods! I think of it as a cross between Children of the Corn and The Village, personally!

How did you come up with the idea of CREED?

Creed actually stemmed from a nightmare that Trisha had! She called me VERY early in the morning one day and told me this dream, then we decided mutually that there was a story hidden there somewhere and we just needed to find out what it was. From that starting point, the story unfolded in our minds!

Do you have any favorite horror movies?
(Or any other movie. Not necessarily horror.)

HAHA I have a ton of favorite movies. Hmmm…let’s see. I love horror classics like Friday the 13th, Halloween and Scream.  For mindless entertainment that just gives me the warm fuzzies, I love Clue and a lot of 80’s movies like The Goonies, etc. LOL, I have weird taste.

I’m just curious after writing all those dark, disturbing scenes, how do you get it out of your system?

Good question! Generally the writing of the scenes doesn’t bother me, but sometimes the research does. I like to leave it all behind and spend time with my kids to get out of that dark space. Generally, they remind me that the world is filled with beauty.

What's next for Lindsay? Could you tell us more of your upcoming releases?

Yes! SWEET MADNESS is a historical fiction horror that reimagines the infamous Lizzie Borden murders in Fall River, MA back in the late 1800’s. That is releasing in September of this year! Then HARDWIRED will release from Flux in November…that is a contemporary science-fiction. Those books are both co-authored with Trisha Leaver, otherwise known as the other half of my dark brain. I do have two solo books releasing in 2016 and 2017, but until the ink is dry on the contract for those, I can’t talk about them! So hard!

(You should do this!!!)
Add CREED on Goodreads!

What book have you devoured over and over again?
When I was a child, I read Where the Red Fern Grows probably four dozen times. No joke.

If you could be a fictional character for a day, who would you be and why?
I know a lot of people might answer this way, but I’d honestly have to say Harry Potter. I don’t want Voldemort after me, but everything else seems SO freaking amazing that I can’t help but wish I could walk a day in his shoes!

What are your three current wishes? Oooh hard one! 1. For my children to grow up happy and healthy, 2. For the world they live in to be filled with kindness 3. To be able to write in some form for the rest of my life.

Ice cream or Chocolate? CHOCOLATE
Pizza or Burger?
Cookies or Cupcakes? CUPCAKES
Twitter or Facebook?
Coke or Pepsi?
Peeta or Gale? PEETA
Annabelle or Chucky? Oh this is hard. I like the legend behind Annabelle very much, but I hated the movie. So…Annabelle, but not in movie form?

Genre: Young Adult Contemporary, Mystery
Release Date: March 24th 2015
Goodreads Summary:
It all starts with one little lie…

Max Cantrell has never been a big fan of the truth, so when the opportunity arises to sell lies to his classmates, it sounds like a good way to make a little money and liven up a boring senior year. With the help of his friends Preston and Parvati, Max starts a business providing forged permission slips and cover stories for the students of Vista Palisades High. Liars, Inc. they call it. Suddenly everybody needs something and the cash starts pouring in. Who knew lying could be so lucrative?

When Preston wants his own cover story to go visit a girl he met online, Max doesn’t think twice about hooking him up. Until Preston never comes home. Then the evidence starts to pile up—terrifying clues that lead the cops to Preston’s body. Terrifying clues that point to Max as the murderer.

Can Max find the real killer before he goes to prison for a crime he didn’t commit? In a story that Kirkus Reviews called "Captivating to the very end," Paula Stokes starts with one single white lie and weaves a twisted tale that will have readers guessing until the explosive final chapters.

Troglodytes Approve 6: Blackfin Sky by Kat Ellis (Interview + Giveaway)

The sixth book with my seal of approval...

Young Adult - Mystery/Thriller, Fantasy

Published September 2nd 2014 by Running Press Kids
PURCHASE: AmazonBarnes and Noble
YALSA 2015 Popular Paperbacks Finalist for Mysteries: Murder, Mayhem, and Other Adventures

Just like any other morning, Skylar Rousseau is late for school, but when she is greeted by a blanket of silent stares upon entering Blackfin High, she discovers that the whole town thought she fell from the pier and drowned on her sixteenth birthday three months earlier. However, Sky remembers the last three months living her life as normal, and since she is a full, living breathing human being, she has no idea whose body is buried underneath her tombstone. Everyone seems reluctant to help except her steadfast friend and crush, Sean . . . and a secretive man who draws her to a mysterious circus in the woods.

Sky must wade through impossibilities and lies to discover the truth about what happened to her, which proves to be a bit difficult when someone is following her every move with the intent to harm her. And Sky's only hope of finding the answers she seeks may have already been turned to ashes.
(Cover and synopsis is taken from the US version of Blackfin Sky, published through Running Press Teens.)

I got to read Blackfin Sky by Kat Ellis last month and I thoroughly enjoyed every page of it! It was such a great mystery novel with a paranormal twist. It's one of my favorite reads for 2015, so far. Miss Ellis' writing style is eloquent and haunting at the same time. Blackfin Sky has a brilliant world building that I very much adored. I am looking forward to read Kat Ellis' upcoming novels!

1. Your debut novel is Blackfin Sky. To those who don't know much about it, could you tell us more about your novel?
Blackfin is a strange little town where things like haunted weathervanes, money-stealing wishing wells, and creepy burned-out circuses in the woods are pretty normal.

Skylar Rousseau spent her whole life in Blackfin – that is, up until the night of her sixteenth birthday, when she fell from the pier and drowned. When Sky shows up at school three months later like nothing happened, her search for answers will unravel more than just the mystery of her own death.
2. How did you come up with the idea of Blackfin Sky?
When I first got the idea for Blackfin Sky, all I knew was that Sky would return after being presumed dead for three months, and that she wouldn’t know what had happened to her. I spent quite a while trying to figure out possible explanations – had she been in an accident and somehow lost her memory? Or maybe she’d been abducted and drugged? – but none of the explanations I came up with seemed to fit. It wasn’t until a travelling circus came to my home town, and I was sitting in the stands watching the troupe perform, that a key piece of the mystery fell into place. To find out what that is, you’ve got to read the book. ;-)

3. Have you always wanted to be a writer? If not, then what did you wanted to be?
When I was a teenager, I went through phases of wanting to do lots of different things. I wanted to be an actress for a while, then a musician, and I even wanted to be a journalist at one point. But nothing seemed to stick for very long until after I’d been to college and worked in an office for a few years. I got an idea for a story, and decided to write it just for fun. The writing bug took hold, and I’ve never looked back!

4. What is the best part of being an author?
There are lots of things I love about being an author, but one of my favourites is never having to say goodbye to my characters. Even when a book is written and published and DONE, the characters still frolic around in my head from time to time, going off on adventures that might make it into a future book, or might not. But there’s always that possibility that a character I fall in love with might go on to have another story, whereas other people’s characters… well, I don’t get much say in when their adventures end.

5. If you could be a fictional character for a day, who would you be and why?
It would either be Lestat from Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire (and subsequent novels) or Damon from The Vampire Diaries. Both are such complex characters, with a huge capacity for love and passion and goodness, but who both struggle with their darker urges, and often revel in being wicked. Being preternaturally strong and youthful wouldn’t hurt, either.

6. What can readers look forward to in your upcoming works?
Breaker is my next novel, which will be published in Spring 2016 by Running Press Kids. Kyle is the son of a convicted serial killer called the Bonebreaker, who moves to a new school after his dad is executed and finds himself face to face with the daughter of his father’s last victim. She doesn’t recognise Kyle, but the more he tries to stay out of her life, the more terrible things happen – almost as though the Bonebreaker’s legacy has caught up with them…

7. Recommend your book [Blackfin Sky] to the readers.
If you like mysteries with a dose of weird and plenty of action, give Blackfin Sky a shot!

To Miss Kat Ellis; thank you so much for letting me interview you! It's an absolute honor.
