Nineteen-year-old Raevyn Jones has never worn a designer gown. She's never had access to unlimited champagne or chauffeured limo rides. But when she is dropped in the midst of the Black Ivy League — against her will — she has to pretend that everything is normal, as if she belongs. When her new friends start to question her sketchy past and her shaky legacy at Benjamin Wallace Fitzgerald University, Raevyn realizes she will have to rely on her street smarts more than ever before. Raevyn starts to receive cryptic text messages and emails from an anonymous sender and she soon discovers that not only does someone want her to leave B.W.Fitz - someone also wants to end her life.

Excerpt from The Legacy:

He stood up abruptly, towering over me. Instinctively, I backed up, bumping against the railing. He closed the space that slipped between our bodies and placed his icy, calloused hand around the back of my neck, pulling me close. His embrace sent a chill down my spine. My legs shook like pudding and I couldn’t stop myself from falling into him.
“Will you go with me?” he asked, only inches away. His sweet breath warmed my face and the invitation fluttered out of my hand.
Right then, the whole world seemed to stop.
My mind drew a blank. I couldn’t think of any words, so I nodded. Before I knew it, his lips brushed mine, gently at first, almost as if it were a mistake. Somewhere, in the pit of my belly a butterfly bat its wings.

Reeling from her boyfriend's disappearance, Raevyn Jones is shocked to learn that she is considered suspect number one. To make matters worse, rumors are swirling that golden boy, Jeffrey Donnelly, isn't just missing...he may never be coming back.

And Raevyn is being framed.

Her second semester at Benjamin Wallace Fitzgerald University, the nation's first Ivy League institution for African Americans, is full of twists and turns.

Soon Raevyn will learn not to trust anyone, not even the people she calls friend.

Excerpt from The Missing:

I buried my face in his neck, breathing in his scent. It was only fresh soap; nothing expensive, nothing suffocating. He was no Jeffrey.  No cologne, nothing sweet.  His pulse pounded beneath his shirt and his heat engulfed me.
I snaked my fingers under his T-shirt and he did the same. He hugged me tighter, enveloping me, and pressing me close until our legs tangled in one mass.
I lifted my face.
He looked down.
We were centimeters then millimeters apart. Hesitant and afraid, our noses kissed.  He pulled.  I leaned.
“Raevyn,” tumbled out of his mouth. His bottom lip brushed mine.
A current rushed through my blood stream. More, my heart demanded.

Author Interview: Anita Hughes (and a Giveaway!!!)

Hello dear troglodytes! It's been a while since I last posted but don't worry because today on the blog, we have a very special guest. And it's...

Anita Hughes
Anita Hughes was born in Sydney, Australia and had a charmed childhood that included petting koala bears, riding the waves on Bondi Beach, and putting an occasional shrimp on the barbie. Her writing career began at the age of eight, when she won a national writing contest in THE AUSTRALIAN newspaper, and was named "One of Australia's Next Best Writers." (She still has the newspaper clipping.)

She received a B.A. in English Literature with a minor in Creative Writing from Bard College, and attended UC Berkeley's Masters in Creative Writing program.

Her debut novel MONARCH BEACH was released in June 2012, followed by MARKET STREET in March 2013 and LAKE COMO in August 2013.

FRENCH COAST was released in April 2015... and ROME IN LOVE will be released in August 2015

She lives in Dana Point, CA with her family, where she interrupts her writing to watch the glorious sunsets.

The wonderful people at St. Martin's Press gave me the chance to interview Anita Hughes about her upcoming novel, ROME IN LOVE. Check it out below!

1. Rome In Love is your newest novel, could you tell us more about it?

is about a young actress who gets the Audrey Hepburn role in the remake of ROMAN HOLIDAY. While on location in Rome, she discovers Audrey Hepburn's letters, written more than fifty years ago, when Audrey was making Roman Holiday. These letters help her make decisions about her own career and relationships.

2. Most of your novels are Women's Fiction (Chick Lit), how is Rome In Love different from your other novels?

ROME IN LOVE is definitely women's fiction - it has great female friendships and romance - but it is a little different because it also has real people - Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, William Wyler and Mel Ferrer.

3. What's the best thing in writing Rome In Love?

I loved writing Rome In Love! I loved writing about Rome because it is such a fascinating city and I adored writing about Audrey Hepburn because I could hear her voice in my head while I wrote.

4. What is your message/piece of advice to those aspiring writers?

Truly write the book you want to read. When I write, I get so wrapped up in my characters, all I want to do is be with them. And also, when you're not writing, read all the time! Nothing is a better teacher than reading.

5. Recommend your novel [Rome In Love] to the readers.

I think my readers will enjoy ROME IN LOVE because it is both a love story and a wonderful homage to Audrey Hepburn. I hope they will come away from reading the novel feeling like they have experienced the food and fashion of Rome, and learned a little more about Audrey's life.

From the author of LAKE COMO comes the story of a young actress who lands the lead in a film that is shooting in Rome, bringing about difficult life choices, new friendships, and a chance at love.

When Amelia Tate is cast to play the Audrey Hepburn role in a remake of Roman Holiday, she feels as if all her dreams have come true. She has a handsome boyfriend, is portraying her idol in a major motion picture, and gets to live in beautiful Rome for the next two months.

Once there, she befriends a young woman named Sophie with whom she begins to explore the city. Together, they discover all the amazing riches that Rome has to offer. But when Amelia’s boyfriend breaks up with her over her acting career, her perfect world begins to crumble.

While moping in her hotel suite, Amelia discovers a stack of letters written by Audrey Hepburn that start to put her own life into perspective. Then, she meets Philip, a handsome journalist who is under the impression that she is a hotel maid, and it appears as if things are finally looking up. The problem is she can never find the right time to tell Philip her true identity. Not to mention that Philip has a few secrets of his own. Can Amelia finally have both the career and love that she’s always wanted, or will she be forced to choose again?

With her sensory descriptions of the beautiful sites, decadent food, and high fashion of Rome, Hughes draws readers into this fast-paced and superbly written novel. Rome in Love will capture the hearts of readers everywhere.
