Blog Tour: FIRSTS by Laurie Elizabeth Flynn (Q&A + Giveaway)

Hello, troglodytes! This is my first blog post for 2016 (yayyy! Happy New Year, by the way!). I'm part of the blog tour for Laurie Elizabeth Flynn's debut novel, FIRSTS. I'm pretty excited to read this because the synopsis sounds fun. In this tour, I got to interview the author plus there's a giveaway (where you'd get a chance to win a copy of FIRSTS) at the end of this post, too! Enjoy!!! :-)

In the vein of Easy A, an honest and refreshing young adult novel about sex, love, and high school.

Seventeen-year-old Mercedes Ayres has an open-door policy when it comes to her bedroom, but only if the guy fulfills a specific criteria: he has to be a virgin. Mercedes lets the boys get their awkward fumbling first times over with, and all she asks in return is that they give their girlfriends the perfect first time-the kind Mercedes never had herself.

Keeping what goes on in her bedroom a secret has been easy - so far. Her mother isn't home nearly enough to know about Mercedes' extracurricular activities, and her uber-religious best friend, Angela, won't even say the word "sex" until she gets married. But Mercedes doesn't bank on Angela's boyfriend finding out about her services and wanting a turn - or on Zach, who likes her for who she is instead of what she can do in bed.

When Mercedes' perfect system falls apart, she has to find a way to salvage her own reputation -and figure out where her heart really belongs in the process. Funny, smart, and true-to-life, Firsts is a one-of-a-kind young adult novel about growing up.

The wonderful people at SMP gave me the chance to interview Laurie Elizabeth Flynn which was really fun! Check it out below:

1. Hello, Miss Laurie. Welcome to the blog, it's an honor to have you. So, your novel [FIRSTS] sounds interesting, could you tell us more about it?
  • Thank you so much for having me on your blog! I’d love to tell you more about FIRSTS. It’s the story of Mercedes, a seventeen-year-old high school senior who offers her virgin classmates the chance to get their awkward, fumbling first times over with, judgement-free. All she asks in return is that they give their girlfriends the perfect first time she never had—and to keep her services a secret. But the secret gets out, and Mercedes has to find a way to salvage her reputation and figure out where her heart belongs.
2. The main character, Mercedes Ayres, seems fun and feisty. What do you like about her the most?
  • Mercedes is a lot of things. She’s smart and sarcastic and driven, but she can also be cold and sad and insecure. It’s that dichotomy in her personality that I like the most. She has trouble trusting anyone and goes to great lengths to keep certain facets of herself hidden because she perceives them as weaknesses. Control is something she heavily relies on, but it’s when control goes careening away from her that Mercedes really learns to listen to her heart.
3. How did you come up with the idea of FIRSTS?
  • I was working on an entirely different New Adult contemporary when the idea for FIRSTS struck. All of a sudden, I got hit with this desire—no, more like a need—to write a book where a girl named Mercedes tries to give guys the perfect first time. I didn’t know what happened beyond that. I just knew I had to write it.
4. How long did it take you to finish writing FIRSTS?
  • I wrote the first draft in three weeks. Of course, many revisions ensued after that! There’s a saying that writing happens in rewriting, and I definitely think there’s truth to it.
5. Last but not the least, what is your message to those who are aspiring to be writers?
  • There’s so much advice for writers out there, and I don’t think there’s a one-size-fits-all mentality. But I do know there are some truths that got me through rough patches of self-doubt as an aspiring writer. One is to trust your instincts and write for yourself, the story you want to tell, instead of writing something you think an agent will want to read. Trends come and go, but if you write with passion and guts, that’s forever. Be bold and don’t think of fear as a bad thing. When I’m scared of a concept, I know it’s worth pursuing.

Also, this is something writers at all stages will come to terms with: The words are the only thing you can control in this industry, so make yours count. Experiment with them. Make sure you’re having fun, because that’s the most important thing.

Laurie Elizabeth Flynn went to school for journalism and later worked as a model, a job that took her overseas to Tokyo, Athens, and Paris. She lives in London, Ontario, with her husband and her Chihuahua.
